A 7.4 magnitude earthquake shook the southern state of Oaxaca on Tuesday, demolishing nearly 30 buildings in the process, and had been felt from as far away as Mexico City. Many people had to evacuate their homes, even those from areas hit by a similarly destructive earthquake back in 2017.
Authorities said on Wednesday that the death toll had hit 10. Roads cluttered with debris had been cleared for travel by worker crews, while residents of the harder-hit areas are still busy looking through the rubble for their belongings, and missing family members.
The death toll had been put to ‘10’ following a statement from the Oaxaca state government, explaining that damages had also been suffered to four archaeological zones, as well as several educational centres.
Vicente Romero, from the town of La Crucecita on the Pacific coast was one of the residents with a ruined home, saying that “Everything was damaged, the whole house was taken away. Everything we have done in our lives is gone.”
“This apartment has always been my home. It’s where I was born, where I grew up, where I have all my memories,” said another resident, by the name of Aura Preisser, whose home had been cordoned off by the local authorities. “If I lost it, I would lose not only my home, but a large part of my heart.”
